“Cultural diversity becomes the ideology of globalization. Nations have more dialogue with each other than is often believed, they fight for soft power and, in so doing, they speak with their neighbors, but also with the Americans. There are intra-regional cultural exchanges on a basis that isn’t strictly tied to blocs of civilizations. Because it’s the world in miniature, because they have become the masters of mainstream entertainment, and because they have made the Internet, the United States will remain the pole of reference and will continue to speak to the entire world [tout le monde – everybody].”

Frédéric Martel, sociologist who worked for several years as a cultural attaché in the United States. He travelled the world to report on the state of mass-media culture, the Americanization of much of the movies, music, and television around the world, and diverse local, regional, national, and international attempts to resist that influence.
